Serena Williams vs. Victoria Azarenka: U.S. Open final live blog

Serena Williams showed her champions’ mettle to come back from a break down in the third set to beat World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, in the first U.S. Open women’s final to go to three sets since 1995. But enough can’t be said for Azarenka, who took advantage of Serena’s dip in form through the second and much of the third set to put herself in the position to serve for the championship at 5-4 in the third set. Experience won out in the end, as Azarenka let loose some nervy errors to relinquish the break and up stepped Serena, who won the final four games of the match to capture her fourth U.S. Open title, 15th major overall, and cap off a summer in which she won Wimbledon, Olympic gold, and the U.S. Open.

LikeI am always amused at racists who speak about Serena Williams' looks. hair, and just ignore her abilities to focus on foolishness. An American woman has won the United States Open is all I care about today. As John McEnroe said, "We are watching the greatest woman's single player EVER!" Anyone saying anything else on mute. Way to go Serena for keeping the trophy in the United States for all Americans, even bigots. The men's tennis team is in reboot with the retirement of Andy Roddick. Way to go Serena! Way to go!

LikeEverybody seems to forget the scandal taken place about 30 years ago when the East German women athletes were disqualified from World Championships because of taking male hormones. I am just wondering why in the modern era nobody is wondering why some women athletes perform with so much power that they could easily compete against men (e.g. Serena Williams) Does any comitee ever check the women athletes for taking male hormones?

LikeMirelaIulianaGherman You sound like a complete idiot. If either Serena or Venus ever tested positive for doping it would be widespread news. Clearly they have not so let it go. Serena is just a tall muscular woman. Venus is tall and slender and is similarly built to the Russians so I'm not sure why anyone would ever accuse her of doping. Bizarre!
