Leave it to Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov — who has been branded  “Baby Fed” for years — to come into Roger Federer’s hometown tournament and hit a shot that even the Swiss papers say tops their own man’s famous U.S. Open “tweener”. Check out Grigor’s behind-the-back pick-up volley winner against Viktor Troicki in the first round of Basel.

Some are saying it’s the shot of the year, while others think it might be the shot of the century. Tennis fans sure do like their hyperbole. In case you need a refresher, here’s Federer’s “tweener” from the 2009 U.S. Open, which he hit to set up three match points.

Dimitrov, who is coached by Patrick Mouratoglou (Serena’s new adviser), went on to beat Troicki 6-3, 6-2. It’s been a solid year of progress for the flashy Bulgarian, who made his first three ATP semifinals this year at Queen’s, Bastad and Gastaad as well as his first fourth-round appearance at an ATP Masters event in Miami. Now ranked No. 62, a few wins in Basel and next week’s Paris Mastesr could see him crack the top 50 for the first time. He’ll play Julien Benneteau in the second round.

While we’re here, the 21-year-old isn’t shy about his love for the trick-shot. Here he is trying to keep his serving practice fun and lively, too.
