The Daily Bagel is your dose of the interesting reporting, writing and quipping from around the Internet.

• Video: On Wednesday, we put together our Best Shots of 2012. Here’s the ATP’s selection.

• Serena Williams takes home the WTA Player of the Year award. No argument here.

• ATPWorldTour.com ranks the top upsets of 2012.

• This is a bit odd: Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley taps Andy Murray and Maria Sharapova as the Melbourne favorites. Really?

• No, Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy aren’t engaged.

• Interesting observations here from Steve Tignor on a fans’ blind spot in being able to evaluate their favorite player’s rivals.

I’ve said before that fans are usually very good at assessing their own favorites, because, much like parents, they know a lot about that player and understand his or her motivations better than most—they see his or her side of things. But fans, and by that I mean fans who are clearly partisan toward one player, are not as good at assessing their favorites’ rivals, because the understanding and sympathy aren’t there. Those players are, after all, a threat to the favorite, and are regarded with a protectively wary eye.

• Peter Bodo makes the case for Ivan Lendl and Sam Sumyk as Coaches of the Year.

• Richard Pagliaro on the Year of the Czechs.

• Non-tennis: A steamy love letter to cheese.

I'm sure Murray and Sharapova will be in the mix, but the favorites?  No way.  On the mens side, Djoker has to be the favorite with Fed and Murray right behind him.  Nadal is a big question mark since he hasn't played in months.  On the womens side, Serena is the favorite until further notice.  Maria has no chance to win unless someone takes Serena out.  I would put Azarenka before Maria.

I'M HAPPY THAT TILEY IS PICKING SHARAPOVA AND MURRAY, PUTS THE PRESSURE SQUARELY ON THEM ...SO THAT THE LIKES OF ROGER, NOLE, SERENA, NADAL AND VIKA CAN RELAX WHILE KICKING ARSE LOL

    ....THEY'RE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE

Setting aside Sharapova's excruciating head-to-head results against Serena this year, Serena is the favorite against the entire AO field, including Azarenka. A truly mystifying statement from a slam director.

As much as I like Murray he will not win the Aussie Open.  Djokovic, Federer, or a reinvigorate Nadal with have plenty to say about that.

Really - Sharapova was playing the best tennis at the end of the year?  I guess this guy didn't watch Serena play.  I read his post and there was no mention of Serena.  He picked Sharapova with Azarenka as second choice.  Serena owned both of them going 8-0 against them in 2012.  Why not just call it his wish list and he would make more sense.
