Australian Open fashion misses

The good news is we’ve been saved from the neon flood that overtook the Australian Open last year, when designers somehow thought the brighter the colors the better. The bad news is the needle seems to have swung the other way, with some conservative designs still missing the mark. From food stains to spirographs to recycled looks, some surprising names make this year’s list of Australian Open fashion misses. (Click here for my fashion hits.)
Maria Sharapova: It’s never good when it looks like you’ve got a huge mustard stain on your chest. (Barbara Walton/EPA/Landov)
Roger Federer: We make BTB history as this is the first time both Federer and Sharapova have been on the fashion miss list. But we’ve seen this color combo too many times. In fact, it’s basically an updated version of the same kit Federer wears in that Rolex commercial ESPN keeps airing. Recycling is a fashion no-no. (Schreyer/Imago/Icon SMI)
Victoria Azarenka: I held out hope that Azarenka would return to Melbourne wearing the shorts that paved the way for her title last year. Alas, we have yet another babydoll dress in a peach color that just doesn’t work against the Aussie blue courts. (Quinn Rooney/Getty Images)
Andy Murray: Not sure why Adidas let Murray debut this look last year at the ATP World Tour Finals, but it was disappointing to see him in an old kit. The coloring on the shoulders makes it look like a car backfired in his face. He looks dusty. (Xinhua/Imago/Icon SMI)
Mona Barthel: Really? Nein. (Zumapress)
Milos Raonic: Raonic made the move from Lacoste to New Balance at the start of the year. Good for the pocketbook, bad on the eyes. (Dita Alangkara/AP)
Tomas Berdych: This is what a completely unbranded tennis player looks like. Weird, right? Formerly with Nike, Berdych signed with H&M but not before the start of the tournament. (Asanka Brendon Ratnayake/Icon SMI)
Camila Giorgi: The Italian is always reliable for some sartorial crazy. (Paul Crock/AFP/Getty Images)
Lleyton Hewitt: There’s just … a lot going on there. (Marianna Massey/Getty Images)
Radek Stepanek: The fact that Stepanek didn’t come out with a kangaroo emblazoned on his shirt makes this an automatic fail. (Peter Parks/AFP/Getty Images)
Fernando Verdasco: The scruff. The ponytail. I will not rest until this siege ends. You’re better than that, Fernando. (Getty Images; Reuters)

I wrote a blog entry about this last week! Please check it out!

LikeMeanwhile as of his match with Davydenko, Federer has gone to a purple/pink combo.

Likeusable.thought Brad Gilbert hated the pink laces, but I definitely preferred Fed's kit from last night to the blue one.

Don't know why anyone would ever think pink shoe laces are somehow a good look on a male tennis player, but whatever, people are endlessly strange.

LikeI actually love Barthel's dress. And the young Camila looks very cute in the abundance of colors.

LikeIn a weird way I actually like Hewitt's get-up . . . that custom shirt has "C'Mon" emblazoned on it, after all. If players can have vanity shoes (and all the big names do now), why not a vanity shirt?

Like"Really?" has been banned as a thoughtful response, now that 3 year olds have begun using it.
Plus both Barthel and Georgi look great. The rest of it was pretty funny.

Sorry folks, but Barthel's dress is absolutely ridiculous and not something that anyone with a modicum of fashion sense would applaud in any way.

Hmm, just for the record I'd say the expletive is a bit over the top and unnecessary. Moron, get lost!
