Daily Bagel: American void left by Roddick’s retirement

The Daily Bagel is your dose of the interesting reporting, writing and quipping from around the Internet.

• Video: Bernard Tomic came back from a set down to beat German qualifier Daniel Brands to set up a third-round clash against Roger Federer. How about this scrambling forehand he hit to secure the break in the second set?

• Doug Robson for USA Today on the void left by Andy Roddick’s absence in Melbourne.

• Video: The Australian Open asks the top players which qualities they would like to have from other players. Among the answers: Novak Djokovic wants Rafa’s Rafter’s volleys, and Agnieszka Radwanska wants Sam Stosur’s serve.

• Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic have buried the hatchet. Time heals all wounds.

• Some great tidbits in Steve Tignor’s daily report from Melbourne.

• From CNN: How women cracked the tennis glass ceiling.

• Self-explanatory blog post from The Changeover: Bernard Tomic wears a hat. Twitter responds accordingly.

• The BBC looks at the challenges of playing in 104-degree heat.

• Non-tennis: Are you as confused as I am about Facebook’s new Graph Search feature?

Really liked the Roddick article. He's missed not just for his consistent Top 10 play but for his charisma, which no current US player has been able to match (on the men's side, anyway).

Yeah, he said "Rafter". Rafa's volleys? Courtney, what are you on?

@trvlwrtr I'm just high on tennis. Definitely heard Rafa when I watched it through. Rafter makes so much more sense.

@SI_BTBaseline  @trvlwrtr LOL. I know I couldn't wait until the exos started in December. Yes, it had only been like 6-7 weeks since 2012 season ended, but I was needing my tennis fix. I'm sure tennis players avoided saying they wanted something from the competition as that gives power to the other person. Funny how many women said they wanted something from the men, but none of the men said they wanted anything from the women. Gotta love psychology!

    I think Djokovic actually said "Rafter's volleys" not "Rafa's" ... I think
