Serena Williams breaks racket in loss to Sloane Stephens at Australian Open

Serena Williams had been on an absolute tear over the last eight months, losing one match and not dropping a set since the U.S. Open final. So you can imagine her frustration when she finally lost her first set of the tournament at the Australian Open and suffered just her second loss since the French Open, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals.

Williams, who looked well on her way to a straight-set win after taking the first set in 28 minutes, suffered a back spasm in the second set, giving her 19-year-old compatriot an opportunity. Stephens wobbled but got the job done. She’ll face No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals on Thursday.

Panicked and frustrated, Williams let it out on her poor Wilson racket after Stephens held easily to 2-1 in the third set. It was a classic, “two swats and a toss.” Fine form, if you ask me.

“Did you see it?” Williams asked after the match. “I even had a wry smile on my lips after that. It made me happy, unfortunately.”

Sloane is really a breath of fresh air. I don't care who the player is, man or woman, if you act unprofessional you are doing a disservice to your sport and ultimately to what or whomever you say you represent.

A lot of players on tour let out frustration by destroying rackets then doing something else outrageous.  Lets call out them all.

Yeah, you're a real class act, Serena.  Spoiled brat.  Glad you got your comeuppance.

@dre  @ohs73 What a loser you must be, dre.  So smashing racquets and throwing them against the bench constitutes acceptable sportsmanship in your limited view?  Whatever floats your boat.   Serena is a boorish, egotistical jerk.  She's done this crap for years.  Check the U.S. Open a few years back when she defaulted a match because she cussed out a linesperson.  Yeah, she's a real piece of work.

@dre  @ohs73 Oh right, I see every player throwing a tantrum like that and destroying their racket.  Serena is a hot head who seems to think she is above everyone else.

Well said.  Serena needs to learn how to lose and win graciously.  No one likes to lose but she should learn from some of the other class acts (Agassi, Novak, Federer).  Give your opponent credit and move on.  She always has an excuse or injury to justify her loss.

@dre I'm not talking about Baghdatis, Azarenka or any other player.  I'm only referring to Serena Williams, who immaturity is on display every time she loses.  She sulks, whines, berates refs and linesmen, and generally acts boorishly -- she has a lot of McEnroe in her.  You never answered my question -- when does smashing racquets and throwing them against the bench constitute acceptable behavior?  NEVER, bub.  At any level.  Watch the video -- the crowd was astonished when she threw her racquet and her tantrum.  And she's supposed to be a role model?   As for your personal insults, well...not much I can do to resolve your ignorance.  I can express myself as well and if I find such conduct as inappropriate, I will.  Serena has misbehaved time and again.  She may be a notable tennis champion, but she is certainly no saint.  What Serena seriously needs is a boot in her big fat backside.  I for one am glad Sloane Stephens fought back and took her out.   As for your opinions, well, you know what they say about them.  If you want to be a Serena apologist, then be my guest.  Out.

@ohs73  @dre  Sorry, Im not a loser.  Your mother is the loser for giving birth to an ignorant animal as you.  If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, then dont speak at all, especially someone you don't know.   You are the jerk.  Don't single out one person and not call out the rest.  Bagdatis destroyed his racket last year and yet, you didnt speak of him.  All the players do it.  So SHUT UP!!!!.  If you paid attention to the sport, you will see that numerous of players did it especially Azarenka last year at the French Open.  So whose the jerk now.  You just wanted to get on a blog site and write your stupid comment without knowing the facts you dumb idiot.  Another thing, you are NOBODY.  You don't play the sport, no one knows who you are so again, SHUT UP!!!!  Get a life!!!!  or find one.
