The WTA field for next week’s Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., was already strong, having received commitments from Serena and Venus Williams, Sam Stosur, Sara Errani and Sloane Stephens. It is now even stronger, as the tournament announced Thursday that No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki, the 2011 champion, has entered. In addition to Wozniacki, fan favorite Andrea Petkovic also received a main-draw wild card this week.
Some injury concerns surround the participation of Venus, who withdrew from her third-round match at the Sony Open last week with a back injury, and Stosur, who skipped Miami with a calf injury.
Wozniacki’s decision to play Charleston after missing the tournament last year is a smart one. She’s rebounded from her 2012 slump this year, highlighted by a run to the BNP Paribas Open final, but she was unable to sustain that momentum at the Sony Open while losing in the third round. Wozniacki is a confidence player, and she probably wants to take advantage of her recent form before heading to Europe for the clay-court season, which won’t start in earnest until the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart on April 20.
