Chris Evert responds to Jimmy Connors

Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert

Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert both won Wimbledon in 1974, the same year they broke off their engagement. (AP)

Chris Evert said Saturday that she is “extremely disappointed” that Jimmy Connors implied in his upcoming memoir that she had an abortion shortly before the two were to wed in 1974.

From Reuters:

“In his book, Jimmy Connors has written about a time in our relationship that was very personal and emotionally painful,” Evert said in a statement released to Reuters on Saturday through her agent Lawrence Frankopan at StarWing Sports.

“I am extremely disappointed that he used the book to misrepresent a private matter that took place 40 years ago and made it public, without my knowledge. I hope everyone can understand that I have no further comment.”

Connors writes in The Outsider (SI.com obtained a copy of the book ahead of the May 14 release) about his courtship of then-17-year-old Evert — which began at an official dinner a week before the Queen’s Club tournament in June 1972 — and the thrill and excitement of sneaking around hotel rooms to avoid Evert’s mother, Connors’ coach and the ever-present tabloid press. Engaged and set to marry in November 1974, Connors writes that their relationship couldn’t withstand two champion egos who were used to getting their way and conceding nothing.

“You can’t have two number ones in a relationship,” he writes. “It’s just not going to work.”

A few weeks before the wedding, Connors writes, “an issue had arisen as a result of youthful passion and a decision had to be made as a couple.” He was dismayed when Evert seemed to have already decided that “the timing was bad and too much was riding on her future.” They ended their engagement in September that year.

I never write on these things but I am one who believes this society of ours has let guys like Connors get away with being an immature, arrogant SOB his whole life.  He obviously never was in a playground situation where he said something stupid and got punched in the face for it.  If he did he would have more smarts and not even consider writing such trash.  He was allowed to do and say anything he wanted his whole life and now he writes this personal stuff about Evert?  Not only bad form, but someone like her sons or brother needs to punch Connors in the face the next time they see him.  Of course it will be tough because Connors doesn't crawl out from under his rock too often.  What a loser in life...

Jimmy Connors: lacking in any class, to the bitter end. I once so MacEnroe beat the crap out of Jimmy at Longwwood. Gratifyiing.

Connors was the biggest A-Hole to ever play tennis and still is one. Not to thrilled about her either. Understand, both are sacks of crap, which is why they gravitated towards each other.

I should think that Conners would like to keep this mighty quiet.  Wasn't she 17 and him 22 or so at the time?  It used to be called statuary rape, didn't it?  Maybe the statute of limitations has run out but anyway, it certainly doesn't help his reputation any.

Chris Evert should have stuck to the BJ's and saved herself for marriage.

Well, well, well.  Chris Everett, America's lily white virgin sweetheart was in trouble.  CHRIS EVERETT HAD AN ABORTION!  I tell young people all the time, it is a matter of time before what lies beneath surfaces.  Before you call them a role model, just wait and if you sit by the river long enough, bodies will come floating by and garbage will surface.  Both Connors and Everett are frauds. And I always knew it.  Well, well, well.

How and remember this was almost 40 years ago, would Everts tennis career been affected, while male athletes can have multiple baby mama's and children for a female athlete its not like you have a hamstring injury.

The reasons certain acts have social stigmas is because not enough people come forward about mistakes they have made in the past. I am not saying I agree with what Jimmy Connors did, but I am saying if more people were honest about their experiences and mistakes in life we would have a better society.

I oppose abortion but all of us have dirty laundry.  Which of us would like to have all of the mistakes of our youth told to the world?  Thank God his salvation is by grace and not our pathetic works, so no one can boast.

Regardless of how anyone feels on abortion, it was wrong of Connors to air her dirty laundry to the public just to sell books. This is something that should have remained between the two of them and possibly a few close friends/family members.

It doesn't get much worse than an article about warring tennis players.  Do people even care about watching them play?

She's "extremely disappointed" in Connors revealing a truth from her past? Not as disappointed as his baby boy that she had sucked out and thrown in the hospital incinerator. A perfectly normal, healthy boy that would be the light of his adopted parents lives -- murdered by Chris and put in the trash. He would be 38 now.

What a selfish, awful woman to not be willing to take a few months out of her "busy schedule" to give this little boy life. I'm sure her conscience has been destroying her from the inside out on every birthday her boy would have celebrated -- the innocent little boy she paid to have killed.

I am truly disappointed in this child tennis prodigy who apparently was so self absorbed that she could even consider adoption for this precious unborn child. Even though killing your unborn child was frowned upon 40 years ago,  Chrissie found a way!  How sad that this story is repeated in every city of America 4000 times a day!  What has happened to maternal love?

    pamelaahome
    pamelaahome

IT IS TRULY SAD WHEN A "RESPECTED ATHLETE" IS REVEALED FOR WHAT SHE IS - A SELF ABSORBED SELFISH EGOTIST WHO PUTS SELF ABOVE OTHERS -- EVEN HER OWN UNBORN CHILD.  I have lost all respect for Chris Evert. Killing your own child so you can hit a ball across a net is a true poverty of mind and spirit. What has happened to America and a mother's natural love of her child???????

@mjhellund Yeah, really.  Shame on Jimmy for keeping Evert's dirty little secret for her when she was making tons of money, and waiting until it won't have any effect on her earnings to talk about it in an honest autobiography.  Of all the nerve...

@melabill In some states, the age for "statch" was as low as 12 or 13, as long as it was your sister or cousin (Think Tennessee here).  Since they were a well-known "item," and were engaged to be married, I think that if anything illegal had happened, it would have surfaced back then.

@melabill "Statuary" rape? I don't think so. Marble can be so...unforgiving. Maybe you meant "statutory". That depends on the statute in question.

@Betty1 You always knew?  Well done Betty.   I bet that it feels great to ride in on your high horse and let the world know.   Maybe now you can get on with your life instead of dwelling on the lives of two others like you have done for forty years.

@DanMeyers Who cares about abortion - just meaningless as a topic, as most of the world has grown up to realise. Far more important things to concern yourself about than a bunch of cells.

And as someone else commented - I don't see definite proof she had one. And if she did - she probably made the right choice.

@DanMeyers WOW, nowhere in that story says she had one, it said "implied".  Until it is a "fact", get off your soap box.  and no I will not get into an abortion rights argument with you.  Decisions are made every day, right or wrong.  It is not my right to judge people on their choices

Guess what, genius--not everyone believes as you apparently do, that life begins at conception.  That aside, while some may have "frowned upon" abortion in 1974, it was legal.  Check your history books-- Roe v. Wade was decided a year before the series of events described by Connors

It wasn't a child even if she had one. And to be honest something we shouldn't even care about when it comes to others.

@GP1 I guess it was in no part Jimmy's dirty little secret either, right. He had nothing to do with it. Nice attitude, in a comment that had nothing to do with what I said. And if you want to argue with my assertation that Connors has always been a classless creep, you are delusional.

@RPbeacher  @KingHill , beacher, if abortion isn't dirty laundry, then nothing is. You are the one with the warped perspective if you're so cavalier about killing an innocent baby that you don't even consider it dirty laundry.

    makthnife
    makthnife

@RPbeacher  @KingHill Actually, YOU, RP, have the warped mind since you were the one who drew the connection of abortion=dirt.. KingHill has a point in that we all have what is deemed negative in our past, thats all. King also said, if you continued your attack, that abortion is a "mistake," and "pathetic." But you didn't continue. Why? had to run your mouth off? Of course KingHill wasn't making that connection, and merely an opinion, which I agree with, btw.

Whats worse...slamming your ex in print, or slamming a stranger online?

Beacher, ah, now on that we agree. Maybe if he had gotten a say 40 years ago, he wouldn't be as likely to write about it now.

@newshamg, you are truly a low-lying gutter secretion and more. You're nothing but an immoral swine. Maybe some terrorist will perform an extreme late-term abortion on you and do the world a favor.

    makthnife
    makthnife

@newshamg  @DanMeyers Who cares? The mothers who had a baby, more than CELLS, you low-lying gutter secretion. Who cares? The baby who was killed, in any form. The regret-laden and depressed parents. This isn't a morning after pill where indeed the life form is barely a clump of cells (for the fact, YOU are nothing more than a clump of cells, as am I...the lining of your stomach-I'd say brain but you are obviously missing that LOL-is just a clump of cells strung together.

Proof? He said it, she's confirming it in her own way, in her own words if you could look down that loooooong nose and read it. Right choice, huh? Killing a baby is of no more importance than an adult being killed then, huh? So when your mother, your son/daughter, your father dies, maybe killed, the world can look at you and say "right choice on that one!"

Hows that for importance. Enjoy that corpse! Fluck 'em.

Thats how you live, huh? Sorry for you...such "rot" in our society.

@Ascan I love how you libs spout facts and try to make it sound like thats the point that wins your argument. Rvs.W: SO? Aaaaaaannnndddd? Pamaelaahome just said she's disappointed. It was "frowned upon" she didn't say "illegal" so here's what you need to do since you're so adept at advice:

Read articles and comments ALL THE WAY THROUGH ok? That means each word, each punctuation mark, each sentence. Form a thought based on the whole picture (thats each word, remember) and then, and ONLY then, are you allowed to make your poor point.

Oh please. As GP1 said, he's writing an honest autobiography & by the reviews of it, he was brutally honest about his own failures.  It makes perfect sense he would include this event in his life.  He didn't go into any unneccessary detail about the abortion Chris alone decided to have-giving him no consideration or say-so in the matter.  He didn't even use the term "abortion"; as the "New York Daily News put it, he 'strongly hints' she had an abortion just before they were to wed. Seems he displayed a lot of class in the way he presented it in the book as well as he was evidently prepared to be responsible for HIS child.  Too bad he had no say so.  And besides, if abortion is Okay, they why should she be so ashamed of it?  Seems pretty hypocritical to me.

@makthnife  @newshamg  @DanMeyers Actually, none of this is real. The funny thing is we are all just figments of Yahweh's imagination who are so arrogant as to think that we matter at all.
