Seven-time champion Rafael Nadal outlasted Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 9-7 in the semifinals of the French Open on Friday.

The match lasted four hours and 37 minutes as the rivals met expectations in a clash that was highly anticipated the moment the draw was released two weeks ago.

Nadal, playing only his second five-set match at Roland Garros, advanced to Sunday’s final and ended Djokovic’s bid for his first French Open title.

Here’s a sampling of the Twitter reaction from current and former pros to Nadal’s victory.

Fantastic accomplishment after an 8 month lay-off. But the real final was with the Djoker.

Well done Rafa!!! You are a legend. This is indeed one of the best tennis matches that I watched since I ever follow this sport, right there with Rafa-Fed Wimbledon 08, Rafa-Verdasco , Rafa-Fed AO 09, Rafa-Nole AO12 .... funny that Rafa was involved in all of this matches... I tell you what if Rafa would not have emerged tennis would have been a lot more boring with endless Federer dominace until 2011 and Djokovic after.... Perhaps I would never followed tennis the way I do it now... (btw I stopped following for 6 months while Rafa was injured) There simply is not passion without him on the courts!

It was indeed the best, most tense match I've seen this year. TBH I didn't expect Nole to perform so well but it seems these top players truly bring the best out of each other.

And those time violations... This rule needs to stop for the good of the sport.

So true Mardy!  If you enforce that dumbass rule you hate athletic physical tennis!
