WIMBLEDON, England — Maria Sharapova fired back at Serena Williams on Saturday in response to comments apparently criticizing Sharapova’s personal life.

In Rolling Stone’s recent profile of Williams, author Stephen Rodrick was with Serena as she talked by phone with her sister Venus about a rival player assumed to be Sharapova.

After chattering about their dad, they move on to gossip. As usual, Serena does most of the talking.

“There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest.” Serena exits the car and the conversation moves on to a top-five player who is now in love. “She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky’ – it’s so boring,” says Serena in a loud voice. “She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.” (An educated guess is she’s talking about Sharapova, who is now dating Grigor Dimitrov, one of Serena’s rumored exes.)

Sharapova said Serena should be more concerned with her own personal life rather than commenting on anyone else’s.

“Obviously, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Serena and what she’s achieved on the court,” Sharapova said at her pre-Wimbledon news conference Saturday. “You can never take anything away from that.

“As for myself, or whether [the comment] was about somebody else, nothing personal. We’ve talked to Serena many times, and I know everyone tries to create rivalries between us here and there. At the end of the day, we have a tremendous amount of respect for what we do on the court. I just think she should be talking about her accomplishments, her achievements, rather than everything else that’s just getting attention and controversy.”

Sharapova then brought up Serena’s unconfirmed relationship with her coach/consultant, Patrick Mouratoglou.

Sharapova gets favorable draw for Wimbledon

“If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids,” Sharapova said. “Talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things. She has so much in her life, many positives, and I think that’s what it should be about.”

Sharapova was asked about avoiding controversy when speaking with the media.

“What I do on the court and what I talk about in my press conference is strictly about my career,” Sharapova said. “I’m sure people want to know more, but yet I try to keep my personal life private. Nobody really cares about what I have to say, my opinions.  If I speak to my friends, that’s one thing. But I don’t go out and try to create things that shouldn’t be really talked about.”

I am from Bulgaria and all I can say is that there was nothing between Grigor and Serena because he was with a bulgarian girl at the time. Just saying.

The real question is, did Rolling Stone article author, Stephen Rodrick, ask Serena if he could include what was, obviously, a private conversation that did not include him, in his article???

    Serena's business IS kicking Sharapova's li'l butt.

Serena has one of the sexiest bodies in all of sports.

She's a ripped athlete and hot.

I've always been pretty much a jock who played hard & fast sports such as football and HOCKEY!!.

I see Serena as a jock, an athlete who plays hard, fast and really good.

I really enjoyed seeing Serena whip Maria's hiney in the Olympics and in this year's French open.

I hope they meet in the Strawberry & cream fields of Wimbledon and Serena does her 6-0  6-0.

Maria seems cool and she's likeable.....Serena....not so much.  I don't think Maria said anything that everyone didn't already know.  I remember reading an interview Serena did years ago and at the time, there was some sort of pandemic going on in England and the interviewer ask her about it.  Her response was something like...I don't know what a pandemic is, but I have a book coming out on Friday.  Brilliant!   Maria...you might not win as many matches against her as you like but you do have a brain.  :)

Serena looks like a gorilla no wonder she is bitter.

I didn't think Maria would hit below the belt like that by mentioning Patrick and his kids.... BUT I don't thnk it was so far off as Serena and Patrick seem to be anything but ashamed of their "thing", so I'm sure she didn't hurt Serena.

Both Maria and Serena have never given the impression that they are on tour to make friends and they are both "players" first before anything else, unlike some of the other players who are actually genuinely friends with some of their fellow players and not just because it's their sister or because they were raised together etc. For example less successful players like Caroline Wozniacki and Aga Radwanska (OMG sorry if I spelled this wrongly, I am not very adept at Polish names!).... And at the end of the day, maybe this is OK and has enabled them both to be very successful, but for me personally, I wish they would both take a lesson from VENUS WILLIAMS who has proven that you can both be a superb and powerful winner on court as well as off-court...

Maria better watch her mouth , Or Serena is really going to humiliate her the next time they meet on the Tennis Court.. This is what Serena lives for ..lol

Stankapova should practice what she preaches. What has Patrick and his kids got to with this? Also, all the messages she was writing on the camera for the world to see after each victory at the FO.... Really private Maria! She is a thoughtless hypocritical HAG! I hope she does make it to the final so Serena can take her shots!

Serena -  proof that great tennis players don't always make great human beings.  'Cool parties'? How old is she?  12?  Maria should have taken the high road, though.

I agree with some of you guys - my first guess was that the comments were about Vika/Redfoo.

I read what Serena said in "Rolling Stone" and I could see where her comments could be misconstrued...she seemed to be saying the h.s. teenager shouldn't have put herself in a position where something like that (molested, raped, attacked) could happen.  As a parent I understand that part and I also know that what transpired was criminal and was egregious.  However, what I have a problem with is Serena's apology later where she says something to the effect, "What I 'supposedly' said...."   Why not just come out with saying, "What I said..." or "What I was trying to convey" instead of "supposedly."  If she thought she was misquoted she should have said that and not "What I supposedly said..."  If you said it, stand up and say it and articulate what the meaning was behind your statement.  It's just never Serena's fault...controversy continually surrounds her.  "Sportswoman of the Year" the same year she verbally abused that lineswoman?  We like Serena because she wins; her tennis ability is without peer, but how she carries herself is quite another story.

I'm no mind-reader, but I don't think Serena was talking about Sharapova-Dimitrov at all.

In the first place,  were Dimitrova even a couple back in March when the remarks were made?

In the second place has Maria ever  been a party-goer or associated with the Hollywood scene?

In the third place doesn't  'he has a black heart' sound like a reference to Red Foo, Berry Gordy's son, rather than to some depraved or wicked soul?   And isn't Vika the one who always talks about being 'lucky' and 'honored' to be playing in Serena's era?  I think the whole thing is a colossal misunderstanding, generated by groundless speculation  by a nosey interviewer.

WOW Maria, wanna call Patrick's kids and tell them you just made them famous. If you are too busy never mind, their classmates will humiliate them over and over again. How careless.

I've always hated Sharapova, I think the media just overhypes and looks and her game ...I mean she's a seven footer tooth pick with no womanly assets who possesses a one-dimensional game. What a sore loser attacking Serena based on unsubstantiated rumors from reporters, I even hate her more now. I wish fails for the rest of her fake life

Point, Maria. Serena wishes she was 1/15th as relevant off court as Mara is. I don't see Porsche, Tag, or Vogue lining up to call Serena. Guess those aren't the "cool" parties though. But hey, Serena always has Essence magazine covers.

Maria should of said no comment. Why she would let a reporter bait her about a comment that Serena made about an unknown player is beyond me. Maria reaction here just was not normal. She is too seasoned with the media to have responded so hastily.  I really believe that Maria wanted to take a shot at Serena. She does it whenever she can. Maria was the only active tennis player to comment about the Sloane and Serena saga. She also made comments about Serena build allowing her to have that serve. This journalist in this article in really a piece a work. We all know some journalist can be horrible, but I think this is the first time that I have seen a journalist so blatantly inject his opinion about who someone was talking about. Normally, they just put the quote in and allow for the reader to decide. Serena already plays Sharapova hard. I can only imagine what will happen if they meet in the finals of Wimbledon.

@tennishog I dont think she was insinuating that she did not say it because I am sure shes aware that he has it on tape. @spystud yes, Essence Magazine and legendary career achievements. And do not bring Vogue magazine into this because Anna Wintour, the editor in chief of Vogue, is always seated in Serenas family box and Serena was also on the cover of Vogue last summer. Has Pova been on the cover of Vogue????? *crickets*

@spystud Paying a mediocre player like Sharapova millions in endorsement is just plain foolish...People talk about Maria being wealthier, but the difference in wealth is meaningless, they are both millionaires. There's nothing maria can afford that Serena can't afford. Im sure Maria would love to have Serena's legendary status in tennis. Too bad, she can't even come close. There are some things money can't buy.

Serena can't buy status. She is an absolute zero in the marketing world. No one wants a huge black woman as their spokesperson. They'll take the hot, tall blonde every time. Rightfully so. White blondes sell, Serenas don't.

Patrick and his kids have nothing to do with this. She's a hypocrite as well ....talking about her privacy while throwing someone else under the bus.... She is an idiot too.... If she was trying to hurt Serena she have come for her not Patrick ...... She could have just approached Serena like a real women ( like Serena did her). So add coward to the list! Serena is going to destroy her again if her tacky azz even makes it that far....

Making young children obese. That might be the single worst argument I've ever heard. I'd rather her sell candy than debate whether virgins should or should not be raped.

Fortunately I don't have to worry about Serena promoting any products because no one pays her to do so. Who would buy anything non-tennis that beast pushes?

    lloydsed12
    lloydsed12

@Pukovnik Yess she is a medicre one-dimensional screaming ball basher! On the other hand you can't question Serena's contributions to women's tennis in both changing the game and bringing about the equal prize money debate. What has Sharapova done apart from making young children obese with her candy line while pocketing the profits, she better start building schools like Roger and Serena if she wants to be remembered for something out of tennis!
