Mikhail Youzhny outlasted Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-5 on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open.
Youzhny, the 21st seed, rallied from 1-4 in the fourth set and 2-5 in the fifth set to make his first quarterfinal in New York since advancing to the semifinals in 2010. Hewitt, the 2001 champion, served for the match at 5-3 in the fifth set, but Youzhny stayed alive by coming up with one of his 10 service breaks.
“There’s not a whole heap more I could have done,” Hewitt said.
The two veterans produced highly entertaining tennis during their three-hour, 58-minute match. Here are highlights of a few points that Youzhny won in a tense fifth set.
