Video: Venus Williams still has the touch

MELBOURNE, Australia — It wasn’t Venus Williams’ best day. She started strong against No. 22 seed Ekaterina Makarova, taking the first set. But her talented opponent, who knocked out Serena Williams in the Australian Open two years ago, raised her level and battled back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round.

But it was still an encouraging couple of weeks for Venus, who made the final at the Hobart International and showed some of her vintage aggressive form against Makarova.

Venus even sent out a reminder that, at 33, she’s more than big serves and forehands. Watch her show off her feather-light touch with this forehand drop-shot winner. Here’s hoping there’s more where that came from.

Goooo, Venus! Marvelous win at Dubai. And we sincerely hope to see you and Serena playing in Major finals again! It'd also be nice to see you both in the finals at the Sony!

Quit begging for Venus. One decent shot means nothing, she's done. She's not relevant.

Your girl Petra knocked it out of the park also.

@spystud, Um, Venus Williams Won Dubai, a Premier Event a mere few weeks ago! And Venus is playing well so far at the Sony, another prestgious event. Brilliant Venus wrote the persuasive open letter to the LONDON TIMES that got women tennis pros equal pay at Wimbledon and the French Open! Ergo, Venus will Always be relevant. Btw, the great Venus Williams has proven over and over again that she will only be "done" when she SAYS she's done!
