MELBOURNE, Australia — Serena and Venus Williams have withdrawn from doubles at the Australian Open, with Venus citing a lower left leg injury. The duo, who have won four Australian Open doubles titles together, were scheduled to play their first-round match later this afternoon.

The withdrawal was announced after Serena finished her third round singles match, a 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniela Hantuchova. It was another scorching afternoon on Rod Laver Arena, and Serena appeared to struggle in the heat.

After the match, she denied reports that she skipped a post-match interview due to dizziness. “I had some pressing things I needed to take care of,” she said. Subdued and short with her answers, Serena said she did not know the details of Venus’ injury and regretted having to withdraw from doubles; however, the move does mean she won’t have to spend more time in the heat.

“I guess it’s a relief, but like I say, we love to play doubles and we love to be out there,” Serena said. “I love getting extra practice like that, so I’ll definitely miss it. I don’t know if it’s a relief, but I will miss it.”

The women at the top of US tennis are getting long in the tooth for the sport and it is showing through injury.

Why are there no young women coming along and taking over from these ladies?

@DianaVandenberg  What the hell are you babbling about? Serena Williams does NOT have a child. Stop trying to evilly manufacture a scandal. You Liar!

@DianaVandenberg  Serena is a single young lady who has Neever had a child. You just make yourself look even more stupid and evil in spewing that nonsense

@BruceDesjardins  Tennis players can get injured throughout their careers. They are playing a sport at the highest level - not tiddly-winks. Shrapova had shoulder surgery in her 20's and Lindsay Davenport and Serena had knee surgery in their 20's. What will be truly exciting is Serena hopefully breaking the Majors won record. It would be tough, but if she can get and stay healthy she is capable of doing it.
