Andrea Petkovic isn’t known for her pure speed, agility, or hands, but she she showed off all three skills during this athletic rally against France’s Kristina Mladenovic in the second round at the WTA’s Paris Indoors.

Pulled into the net by a Mladenovic drop volley, Petkovic raced forward from behind the baseline to put a short ball back and ran to cover the line. Mladenovic, an accomplished doubles player (she just won her second major mixed doubles title at the Australian Open) wisely puts the volley behind her, forcing the German to stop, reverse course, and spin. But instead of just bunting the ball straight back, Petkovic gets under the ball and actually pulls it cross-court into the open court.

This time last year, Petkovic was back home in Germany recovering from knee surgery. Now she’s pulling off points like this:

Petkovic went on to win the match 6-4, 6-2 to advance to her first WTA quarterfinal since July last year. She’ll face Alize Cornet.
